We all know of social media and how today it has become an important part of our life. Today almost every person in the world has an account on some social media platform whether it be Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. To say as technical definition.

Social Media is basically defined as coming together of internet based applications that builds on the ideological and scientific foundations for transforming communication, into an effective and interactive conversation between different societies and individuals.

Today social media is playing a very important role in our life. Whether it be chatting with our friends and relatives or establishing contacts with old friends or it be interacting with minds living in other countries, social media is totally a boon.


The main aim of social media is to enhance people’s social relationships, ironically though, it made people socially awkward, and now people prefer chatting through online media than talking face to face in real. It is happening so that people’s friend list is increasing day by day but to contrary their real life social bonding is not progressing much, it’s slowly deteriorating.

Social Media with giving you new friends is also giving cyber criminals great opportunities!!! They are using the same platform as yours and can may be one of your friends and in following ways are committing crimes without your knowledge:


 There may be several types of enemies in form of our friends. Some are as follows 

·         Thieves of your Identity: 

   These criminals love to go through the bio of their prey and steal information like 

  your phone numbers, 
  address, 
  name and 
  other personal information 
 which is enough for them to rob your bank account without you knowing. They may also sell these to other sources.

·         Online Stalkers or Predators: 

Do you love posting your daily schedule online so you can get some fancy comments from your friends? Well there are also criminals looking for this. Now what they will do of it!!? Lots!! By knowing your whereabouts, your schedules, it becomes easy to victimize you. Like they can break your house while you are gone on an outing or vacation. So don’t make it easy for stalkers to find you!
Criminals are sitting their looking through your posts waiting for chance to attack you. Beware!!!

Well, you don’t know your company might be tracking you or the company with which you have your interview planned might already know of you.       Addiction: This is a truth that every social media user is aware but try to avoid!! Yeah, if you don’t use social media then do know that once you began using it you will spend hours going through posts, thinking that you are doing lots of productive work but in end when you will leave it, realizing that your precious hours were not a bit productive. Instead of learning, people end of doing other things…
  
     Isolation: Now you must have heard ‘Human is a social animal’ and its quite true, as we interact face to face, there are lots of things that happens in our body which help us keep psychologically, emotionally and physically fit. The person who spends lots of time on social media faces social isolation which can impair brain hormones that’s why they face lots of stress, anxiety, aggression and other emotional issues. 
     
     Distraction: Now that’s one of the main disadvantage of social media, getting distracted!!! Majority of social media users can’t go an hour without checking for updates leading them to be always distracted from important work. They are not able to give their full attention to their work, family, real life and just end up frequently checking for status, updates, stories, posts and commenting…
   
     Increased Comparison: Comparison is in nature of a human being and there is nothing bad of you if you compare but over comparing will end you being sad and depressed. On social media people see lots of people wearing lots of styles and having many other things and they began comparing, this happens more with youth. And in end their behavior changes and increase bad comparisons

     Increased Violence: It is undeniable that social media makes us aware of our surroundings and happiness of world. But it is also undeniable that it increases risks of violence and sex abuse due to some bad contents which are also being posted. Reading and watching bad news will relate to negative actions.

     Privacy Risk: It is often seen that people don’t know the privacy policies of the social sites they are using and it may be that their identity is being given to third parties by these websites which can be used for cruel purposes.

     Misinformation: Many people to gain more followers or like or comments for their posts, pass some unreliable, wrong information, even amateur medical advices which can lead to great disasters. At this time of Corona, lots of wrong information is being passed and government is trying best to stop this. We must not pass unreliable information or believe them.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): Fear of Missing Out is a phenomenon that was born at the same time of Facebook and it is one of the most important negative aspect of social media. It is a form of anxiety which happens when you are scared of missing out some positive experience which someone else is getting.

     A false sense of Connection: There are many social sites which make it difficult for people to distinguish between real life relation and one that on social media. Through concentrating their energy on those less realistic and meaningful relations, people end up sacrificing the one in real life. It is very true that a real friend or real relation in person is of more help and lasts longer.

     A False Reality: People selectively post on social sites, they post what they want others to see. On social sites, people show only their good side while hiding the bad one. The profiles are usually filtered and sterilized.

     Overwork for Brain: It is seen that social sites are used in our all free time, giving our brain no time to rest making our brain overwork. Your bran can’t have enough capacity to control and manage all the tasks.

      A Waste of Time: It is a fact that once alerted to a new post or tweet, it takes about 20 to 25 minutes for average user to return to original task, leading to wastage of time.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BETTER USE

Users should take care what they are visiting, they should limit their use to an extent. Parents and Caretakers should keep a watch regarding to use of social media by their teens. Family discussions can help inculcating good habits in their child. The idea is of becoming a friend to teens. It should also be taken care by communities like libraries to post good resources.

HOW TO BE SAFE WHILE USING SOCIAL MEDIA?



  • Keep your mobile location off when it is not in use.
  • Switch off bluetooth when not in use. 
  • Switch off your hotspot and wifi when not in use. 
  • Keep a tough pass word for your social, financial and professional account.  Mind it length of password doesn't matter it's tough. 
  • Use screen lock in your mobile,  laptop and computer. 
  • Always log off your accounts and apps after use.
  • Mind the applications that run in back ground.
  • Don't reply the mails of which senders not known to you or spam mail. 
  • Porn sites are very vulnerable for data theft.
  • Be aware while writing reviews of any product and giving feedback, watch the nature of all query. 
  • While using camera switch off Google geo tag if it is not required.
